15 Children’s Books About Farms and Food 2025

Best Children’s Books About Farms 2025

Best farm books 2025

Accurate books about food and farming can be hard to find. We have a list of 31 of our favorites from 2023, which are still excellent.

Here are some more!  Books with a * should be reviewed before you share them. Book pictures are links to purchase.

1.  The Soil in Jackie’s Garden

The 2025 AFBFA Book of the Year, this book explores composting, pollinators, and plant life cycles as well as community gardens.

2. I LOVE Blueberries

A story of friendship, determination, and hydroponics.

3. Potatoes for Pirate Pearl

A fun way for students to learn about how potatoes grow.

4. Akeem Keeps Bees

This book is better for grades 3 and up, but it is a fun, comprehensive look at honeybees.

5.  Outdoor Farm, Indoor Farm

This book does a great job of explaining the difference between traditional farms and indoor farms.

6. Farmer Eva’s Green Garden Life

An inspirational look at Farmer Eva Sommaripa as she founded Eva’s Garden in South Dartmouth, MA.

7. A Garden is for Growing

A heartwarming reminder that growing a garden is a great family activity.

8. Still there was Bread

A heartwarming look at life through multiple generations and the bread that tied them together. Not a ton of agriculture information, but rural life ties.

9. The Pie that Molly Grew

Written in the style of “The House That Jack Built”, this is the story of a pumpkin pie.

10. Inside the Compost Bin

While we’d recommend “The Soil in Jackie’s Garden” for younger students, this one can be used with older grades or students who are actively looking to create their own compost bin.

11. Beansprout

What happens when you plant a seed and it does not grow? A great book to explain what a seed needs to grow, and how to handle disappointment if it doesn’t.

12. Seasons on the Farm*

A cute look at a family farm through the seasons. Some scenes show an antique tractor without a rollbar. *Please review before you share. Another book that also looks at seasons on the farm is Farm Boots

13. Growing Green: A First Book of Gardening

We loved the illustrations in this practical guide to planting different vegetables. This is not a story - it is a nonfiction guide.

14. Poo Pile on the Prairie

What can poo do? This is a wonderful example of nature’s awesome renewal and sustainability powers.

15. Something, Someday

This is a community garden book. Not too much about agriculture, but the message of coming together to use a space to plant a garden is a good one.

Bonus

Mentioned, but not necessarily recommended: The Riding Lesson*

Good books about horses and caring for horses are hard to find. This book does a wonderful job of explaining caring for horses, which is why it is mentioned. However, it contains several scenes of young riders on a horse without a saddle, which may not be the safest option for inexperienced riders. Our rules on recommending books include a note about safety as a priority, which is why it doesn’t make our official list, but it is a wonderful resource about care. *Please review before you share.
