Super Science Projects About Earths Soil and Water
By Robert Gardener
Soils are an area that has limited options for excellent children's books, yet it is one of the most important topics in understanding agriculture. This book is a very pleasant surprise with one exception. The text and pictures lead students to explore soil composition, structure, capabilities and its relationship to water and plants. The one area of concern is under the title “A Polluted Aquifer.†It refers to fertilizers in the same category as pesticides and infers that they are poisons. If this book is used that area should be addressed and students should understand that fertilizers are nutrients. As with many other substances if used properly they are not toxic but the dose makes the poison and can be hazardous if present where they should not be or in quantities above recommended fertilizer rates.
